Believe it or not, if you are eating these fruits, then you are not eating fruits in scientific terms!
According to science, a fruit is the seed-bearing structure
in flowering plants (also known as Angiosperms) formed form the ovary after
fertilization on stigma has been done. The ovule forms the seed after
fertilization and ovary forms fruit (pericarp) and the layers outside the seed
forms the fruit wall. But some fruits like Apples and pears are not true fruits
as much of their fruit flesh is derived from thalamus.and so are called false
fruits in botanical language. The part we generally throw in the bins along
with the seeds ,is the actual fruit. Other examples of false fruits are
Pineapple, common fig, Mulberry.
Moreover, some fruits such as litchi and pomegranate do not
have edible fruits. In litchi, the part we eat is a part of seed( i.e. tertiary
integument which usually is a part of the seed coat but forms the edible part in
this case) not the fruit. While in pomegranate, the edible part is also a part
of seed i.e. testa, not the real fruit. The real fruit is again what you peel
off and throw away in the bin.
Now next time you
have these, you cannot say in a scientific language that you are going to eat
true fruits.
